Trial shewed that in the 18 months from January 1896 to June 1897 the gambling house had made a profit of $34,681 and a loss of $39,376.

That shews gambling to a large extent than

mere coolies could indulge in.

There is no doubt that the house had made

heavy losses in the last 6 months of its existence. Is it not probable that one of the causes of these losses was the ever increasing expenditure on hush money, which is evi- denced by Sham In's list and no doubt became necessary

in proportion to the increased notoriety of the house and consequent

increased danger of interference with it.

Paragraph 20. Tse Leung has explained very

clearly what he understood it was that the Petitioner did

not wish him to speak about.

I see no reason to doubt Tse Leung's evi-

dence regarding the conversation that Petitioner held with

him.

Paragraph 21. It is not a fact that F. C. Au

Hing was actually banished.

The evidence of these two constables speaks

for itself.

It is hearsay no doubt but in an enquiry of

the nature that was being held I considered, and Mr. Dennys

agreed
